The Dawn of the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival
Returning to any proud South African rugby school as the leaves turn with autumn always comes with a heavy dose of nostalgia. From early morning kickoffs on frosty fields to the thrill of a big 1st XV derby fixture, the memories come flooding back.
Over the past five years I have enjoyed working as a commentator at the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival and other standalone schoolboy rugby fixtures. Returning to Botha’s Hill in 2022 had a special feeling to it, having not watched a schoolboy rugby match since 2019.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I’ll admit that I was more than impressed by the level of rugby put on display, matched by the excellent conditioning of the young players. I’d feared two years of missed rugby seasons would have hamstrung player development, but this idea was well and truly quashed.
Kearsney produced some fantastic tries and memorable matches and that was just one of a handful of major rugby festivals being hosted around the country over the Easter weekend and school holidays.
There also seems to have been a relative leveling of the playing field with dominant schools being tested on all fronts by schools that may not have been as competitive in years gone by.
Varsity Cup – High Noon Showdown
It would be remiss of me to not mention the Varsity Cup which recently came to a thrilling conclusion. As a proud University of Pretoria alumni, it was a pleasure to watch Tuks fight back with a late try to beat Maties to claim the 2022 crown. Perhaps more pleasing was the presence of big crowds – an indicator that our battle with Covid is seemingly winding down.
Needless to say the Rugby Bricks team has been humbled by the amount of South African youngsters that are kicking off our tees. Our journey in the country was born in the time of Covid-19 and we’ve had to be resilient with rugby halted over the past 24 months.
To every single person that has tagged us in social media posts on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Twitter – thank you! It’s been a pleasure for the team to set up a slick distribution network in South Africa and we’ve been delivering tees around the country timeously to many happy kickers for nearly two years.
We’ve also managed to team up with some of the best young talent the country has to offer and are proud to see so many top kickers in the Varsity Cup using our Rugby Bricks tees.
Vodacom United Rugby Championship – Sunset Sensation
Last but not least, four of the country’s top kickers are now using Rugby Bricks tees in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship. To Bulls flyhalf Chris Smith, Sharks flyhalf Curwin Bosch, Stormers flyhalf Manie Libbok and Lions flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse – you all personify the Rugby Bricks mantra of #outworkoutlearn.
We look forward to the rest of the South African rugby season through the winter months and hope to see more South Africans joining the Rugby Bricks family.
